Observations on the efficiency of two new monitoring devices for storage insect pests
ABSTRACT: In preliminary trials carried out in Kano, Nigeria, two new insect detection devices, a corrugated paper insect trap containing a synthetic pheromone as well as a food lure, and a plastic probe trap, were separately compared with other devices used for
monitoring insect pest infestation of stored products in a standard grain store and a traditional granary. Significantly more insect pests were trapped in the store with the corrugated paper trap than with the other devices used. In the traditional granary, significantly more insect pests were caught with the plastic probe trap; with or without food lure, than from visual examination of grain samples. The prospects for the use of these devices in early detection of insect infestation in grain stores and granaries at the small-scale farmer level are discussed.
