Studies on the biology of Dinoderus distinctus
Lesne (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae)

Some aspects of the biology of Dinoderus distinctus Lesne was studied under laboratory conditions in Port-Harcourt, Nigeria. Whole maize flour was used as food substrate. The mean incubation period of
egg was 6.04 ± 0.14 days. The growth ratio of the larval head capsule width. ranged from 1.32 to 1.40. Four larval instars were observed, the prepupal stage lasted for not more than 24 hours and the pupal stage 4-6 days. The period from larva to adult was 26.97 ± 10.9 days. Preoviposition period gave a mean of 24.68 ± 2.14 days. The mean number of eggs laid per female was 162.68 ± 19.36 with the peak of oviposition at the 8th week after adult emergence. The mean longevity
of male and female adult on broken maize was 126.04 ± 15.18 days and 137.68 ± 13.54 days respectively.
