Life Cycle and Impact of Greater Wax Moth. Gallenia niellonella L (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), Feeding on Stored Beeswax.

ABSTRACT: The female greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyraldiae), laid from
107 to 297 creamy eggs on crude beeswax. At 26.7 ± 1.9°C and 93.0 ± 5.3% RH, the mean egg incubation
period was 0.7 ± 0.1 day, and the duration to completion of larval and pupal development were 20.0 ± 1.2 and 14.2 ± 1.5 days, respectively. The 1st and 2nd instar larvae were white, the 3rd – 5th instar larvae were greyish and the adults were dark brown with black speckles concentrated mainly on the fore wings. The total developmental period was 34.9 – 37.6 days. Adult longevity was 9.0 ± 4.3 days. Consumption of, and
damage to crude beeswax were higher compared to pure beeswax. It was therefore recommended that crude beeswax be processed to pure beeswax before storage to reduce greater wax moth damage.
