Radiographic examination of Stored Grains and Seeds to Reveal Internal Insect Infestation
OSUJI, FABIAN. N. C
Abstract: The internal infestation conditions of some stored grains have been explored using the General Electric X-ray Grain Inspection Unit. Sorghum and maize infested by Sitophilus zeamais Motsch., wheat infested by S.. granarius (Linn. ), S. oryzae and Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier), and cowpea infested by Callosobruchus maculatus (Fab.) have been radiographed. Kola nuts infested by Balanogasris kolae (Desbr , ) were also X -rayed. Some ordinary photographs of the infested grains were taken for comparison. In all cases, the radiographs revealed details of infestation within grain kernels which were not discernible in ordinary photographs, or by other conventional methods of investigation. The application of the radiographic technique in the elucidation of the post-embryonic development of stored grain pests inside grain kernels and in the inspection of .commercial grains and produce is indicated.
