ABSTRACT: The development of black coloration by some grasshoppers after the burning of their habitats has been studied. Only 11 out of the 80 species encountered exhibit this ability and the process appears reversible. Both the integument and elytra blacken. The blackening is positively correlated with the degree of burning of the environment or the exposure of the grasshoppers.
