The effect of piperonyl butoxideand saffrole on the insecticidal potency of precocenes 1 and 2 in the rice-brown plant hopper, Nilaparvata lugens
ABSTRACT: The effect of two methylenedioxyphenyl compounds (synergists), piperonyl but oxide (PB) and safrole, on the insecticidal potency of anti-juvenile hormones, precocenes 1 and 2 in the rice brown planthopper, Nifaparvata lugens (Stal) was studied in the laboratory. HP and safrole synergised the toxicity of precocenes 1 and 2 in female adults of N. lugens probably by inhibiting the enzymatic hydration of precocenes. The inhibition of enzymatic hydration
of precocenes by BP and safrole in N. lugens, which possibly resulted in the synergistic action of the latter on the former compounds, if it can be linked to organ specificity, offers an attractive approach to insect control.
