Preliminary analysis of a field population of Aspidiotus destructor Signoret (Homoptera: Diaspididae and some
soft-scales on coconut palms.

ABSTRACT: The insects which attack and damage coconut palms in NIFOR, Benin were studied from April 1979 to July 1980. Aspidiotus destructor Signoret was found to be the most abundant scale insect pest of the coconut palm in this study. Others included Pseudaspidoproctus vayssieriellus Ghesquirei and Icerya pattersoni Newst (Margarodidae), Saissetia lutea Newst and Ceroplastes sp. (Coccidae). All the scales encountered were more abundant during the dry season than during the rainy season. Rainfall and relative humidity were negatively correlated with scale population. Peak populations of the various stages of A. destructor were observed during the month of May and November. All the stages of these scale insects were always present on except in the month of July when only traces of old infestations were found. The mean
number of eggs per fully laid female similarly varied with the dry and rainy season periods.
