Resistance to yellow borer, Tryporyza incertulas (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in rice varieties

ABSTRACT: Fifty-seven rice varieties reported by other workers as possessing some resistance to the yellow borer, Tryporyza incertulas (Walker) and to some other insect pests and diseases of rice were intensively screened in field and greenhouse experiments. Only 6 out of these exhibited some resistance. Two varieties WC 1253 and WC 1251 were consistently more resistant than the others both in terms of larval survival and development. In the field screening, observations made at 35 and 55 days after transplanting were positively correlated. The expression of resistance in the field, however, differed from the observations made in the screenhouse as a result of the complex nature of the borer species in the field.
