Breeding Sites Preferences of Anopheline Mosquitoes in Benin City, Nigeria

ABSTRACT: A study was made of the preferred breeding sites of anopheline mosquitoes in Benin City between March and September, 2000 using dippers. Seven possible breeding sites which included gutters, peridomestic runoffs, ponds, tree holes, containers, wells and leaves were examined. The first three were preferred with the gutter habouring the bulk of the population (51.0%) followed by pond (31.0%) and the peridomestic runoff (19.0%). Breeding attained its peak in June (27.1%) and was lowest in March (28%). The breeding sites and months should be considered during malaria control programme.
