ABSTRACT: An investigation was conducted to evaluate insecticides and mulching materials for the control of Helicoverpa (heliothis) damage to tomato fruits. The results revealed that permethrin (Ambush) ulv and cypermethrin/dimethoate (Cymbush Super ED) significantly controlled Helicoverpa damage to tomato fruits while decamethrin (Decis) ulv, cypermethrin ulv and dimethoate (Rogor) ec were ineffective. The level of fruitworm damage decreased with increase in the frequency of spray application. Lower fruitworm damage occurred on tomatoes mulched with grass than with maize or sorghum stalks. The generally low level of Helicoverpa damage failed to influence yield in the three experiments.
