Survey of Plants Used in Maize (Zea mays) L. Storage in Abeokuta North Local Government Area and the Efficacy of a Selected Species Against Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

ABSTRACT. A survey of plants traditionally used for preserving stored maize (Zea mays– L.) against Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky was conducted in the late season of 2003 in five villages (Akiegun, Idenro, Ilala, Ileniku and Onigbado) in Abeokuta North Local Government of Ogun State. The plants identified were Aframomum melegueta (Rosch) K. Schum (leaf and seed), Azadirachta indica A. Juss (leaf), Cannabis indica L. (leaf), Capsicum annuum L. (fruit), Cassia sp. (leaf), Khaya grandifoliola C.De. (stem bark), Lophira lanceolata Tiegh. Ex Keay (leaf), Olax subscorpioidea Olivo (leaf). and Secamone afzellii (Schult) K. Schum (leaf). Application of 2.0g stem bark ash and powder of Khaya grandifoliola (Mahogany) per 2Sg maize grain caused significantly (P<0.05)higher weevil mortality, 90.0% and 87.S% respectively, when compared with the control. The mean percentage grains with egg plugs of S. zeamais was significantly lower (P<0.05)being 4.1% and S.9% at 2.0g of bark ash and powder, respectively compared with the control. However, the mean developmental period (egg-adult) of S. zeamais was significantly longer (P<0.05)at the highest dosage (2.0g) of the bark ash and powder of K. grandifoliola. The number of emerged F, adults was significantly lower (P<0.05)at the highest dosage rate 2.0g of bark ash and powder being 12.0 and 18.S adults, respectively, compared with the control, 54.0 and 60.5 adults.
