Larvicidal Efficacy of Chlorfenapyr and Clothiandian for Control of Immature Stages of Anopheles gambiae s.l

Abstract

Application of insecticides for control of malaria vector has been the main approach for vector management in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study presents the outcome of an alternative pro-insecticides Chlorfenapynr and Clothianidin as larvicide for Anopheles gambiae. Collected immature stages of Anopheles mosquitoes from the wild were reared at 26±3oC and 74±6% relative humidity at the Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan Insectary. Test solutions of Chlorfenapynr and Clothianidin prepared at concentrations of 6.25µg, 12.5µg, 25µg, 50µg, 100µg, 200µg, and 13.2µg, respectively were used. To Chlorfenapyr, batches of twenty-five late 3rd to early 4th instar larvae and pupae of mosquito were introduced separately into each of the test concentrations in 250ml deionized water. While, test concentration of Clothianidin of 1ml and 0.5ml of 13.2µg in 250ml deionized water was used, with four replicate each, not leaving out positive control (1ml of acetone in 250ml deionized water only) and 250ml deionized water as the negative control. Mortality was recorded at an interval of 24hrs for 5days. Larvae exposed to different concentration of Chlorfenapynr recorded 100% mortality within 24hrs of exposure except in 6.25µg where 92% mean mortality was recorded within 72hrs which was significantly lower, while no mortality was recorded across all the pupal set up. Larvae exposed to Clothianidin recorded 98% and 100% mean mortality in 0.5 ml and 1ml respectively within 24hrs, while pupal mean mortality was 71.7% and 76.7% at the respective concentration the insecticide within 48hrs. Hence, Chlorfenapynr and Clothianidin was significantly effective for larval source management within 72hrs of exospure to immature stages of Anopheles mosquitoes
