Cytotaxonomy: II: Standard chromosomes of the Simulium (Edwardsellum) damnosum Theobold (Dipkra: Simuliidae)
ABSTRACT: Male meiotic chromosomes and larval salivary gland polytene chromosomes were studied in Feulgen squash preparations of Simulium (Edwardsellum) damnosum Theobald. The position of the primary constrictions of the three meiotic bivalents
approximate the position of the centromeres in the three giant salivary gland polytene chromosomes. A description of the standard chromosomes of the subgenus and the micromophological landmarks associated with each chromosome is given and illustrated with microphotographs. The value of these
landmarks, the uniqueness of the banding pattern and the use of both in the diagnosis of species complexes are discussed.
